Hello,

I came across two different depictions of SM.82 Marsupiale, both depicting a beam of light(?) illuminating the rhomboidal wing markings.

source: Modeling Madness

What was the purpose of these markings, and the light beams?

On the evening of October 18, 1940, from the Gadurrą airport on the island of Rhodes, 4 Savoia Marchetti S.M.82 took off, overloaded in fuel and bombs, to strike Oil refineries in Bahrain, where they arrived at 2:00 am. Then they landed the following morning at 09:00 am in Zula, near Massawa in Eritrea, with a residual fuel for only 30 minutes of flight.
The leader aircraft was the only one equipped with complete arrangement for radionavigation and the other three had to follow it on sight. To facilitate this procedure the white painted rhombuses on wings of the head aircraft were illuminated by a pair of spotlights.
Ciao

Thank You, Fabrizio, for a very quick and concise explanation.
This makes perfect sense, as the Italeri box-art shows a second aircraft (without the rhombus markings) following closely.

regards,
Aleksandar
