Dear friends, I'm doing my best to find information and pictures of the 5 Alciones that were committed to the actions of the Corpo Aerea Italiana over the Channel and South East England. Can anybody please help me? I'm specifically looking for an Alcione with the registration 172-1, MM 22377. I do this research as a preparation for building a monoderiva-kit by Supermodel.
Thanks and kind regards from Holland,
Jan

Hello Jan: I only have 2 photos (one of 172-1) and a profile. These are from the book "Lictorian Fasces over England" Marek Sobski (kagero publications) if you serve and you please tell me the shipping (send me your personal e-mail) Salutti Raul

Hi Orville. thank you very much. I have two pictures that are probably the same as in your book. On one of the pictures one can only see the nummer of the squadriglia (172) but not the individual airplane number (=1). I guess that Supermodel based its monoderiva on this picture.

Anyway, I'm building the 172-1 right now.
There is not much known about the operations of Alciones over the Channel. All I could find was some info on decoy operations (to take the RAF's attention away from the attacking Fiat Br.20M's) and tactical reconnaisance missions. The book I use is the outstanding "Regia Aeronautica, the Italian Air Force 1923-1945 - an operational history" bij Chris Dunning (Classic, 2009).

If you have any more information on this matter I would be very glad.

Thank you in advance!

Jan

Dear Jan This is the information:

172 Squadriglia Ricognizione Strategica Capitano Carlo Pirelli, Chievres, subordinated to 56 stormo Caccia Terrestre.

During november 11/40, attack five airplanes a convoy near Great Yarmouth, escorted by 24 Fiat G-50, the result of this attack is uncertain.

January 10/41, in flying to returned to Italy Cant 1007 bis (MM 22144) lost over Frankfurt by the german flak (stupid accident).

Jan, unfortunately is the only information I found in the book that you cite previously.

Best regards Raul.

This was interesting - I had the impression that the Cants were only meant for reconnaissance.
