Hello,

A recent start of "Total WWII Exotic" group build on my local forum has rekindled my interest in Regia Aeronautica, and first on my list is this interesting bird:

I am doing my research for the prototype depicted on the box, but all I have found are these photos from Ali E Uomini and Airwar sites:

Now, I have noticed some discrepancies between the kit and these photos:
- The canopy is not the model adopted as standard in series production (and given as a kit part)
- The camouflage is clearly not the "poached egg" type, as suggested by the instructions:

To me, it looks more like a two-color scheme, as used on Saettas

Or maybe even a very tight three-tone cammo as found on Linces

What I need Your help and opinions here, is to determine whether the machine from the boxart is the same as in these photos.
Maybe the photos depict e.g. the first protoype, and the kit depicts a second one?

Regards,
Aleksandar

Looks like the poached egg camo scheme:

IMAM
Giallo Mimetico 3, 4
Verde Mimetico 3
Marrone Mimetico 2
Bruno Mimetico

See color guide:
Color Guide: Serie Mimetica : 1938 - 1941

Scroll down to Table 1.

Thank You for the suggestion, but to me it looks too fine and dense to be the "poached egg" scheme. In absence of better terms, i cannot see the "egg whites" Confused

Could You tell me if that was the official scheme (or just one of possible schemes) used by IMAM?

Stormo color guide mentions no IMAM in patterns

Hello Aleksandar,
Examples of the "poached egg" camo scheme that appear to be "dense" MM.445, C.202 Prototype autumn 1940:

I can see the egg whites on the Ro.57? The lighting and the angle of the shots wash-out the camo scheme. Also Marrone Mimetico 2, likely used in this camo scheme, is reddish and shows up darker in orthochromatic film. Keep in mind the box art corresponds to the prototype aircraft.

Just a correction, the D type camo schemes don't apply to the Ro.57 prototype because the D type colors didn't yet appear at the time the photograph was taken i.e., D1 = Tavola X: Nocciola Chiaro and VOS2.

Thank You for the explanation. The example with C.202, that You have enclosed, answers my question completely. "Poached egg" it is!

Then this undoubtedly means that the series production canopy and wheels (enclosed in the box) are incorrect for the prototype.
Oh well... To the scratch-cave!!

I will keep you guys posted here when I start the model.

Aleksandar

One more question before I start:
What colors do You suggest for wheel well and/or cockpit for this prototype?

I have probably posted this somewhere else on this forum before,
But it is the only thing stopping me from tackling this kit.

Could anyone please help me with some drawings or dimensions of main wheel tires and/or hubs?
The Catalogo Nomenclatore drawings contain no data on size, just cat. No.

Other scale drawings by various authors and kit wheels disagree with the photos (they look too small to my eyes)

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion,
but as I said, catalogue drawings are of no use for me, since they are drawn in perspective, and contain no dimensions for accurate scratch-building.
(if You look at my previous post, You will see those exact drawings)

Aleksandar
