Because I get allot of questions about this subject (naturally, since Stormo is a decal retailer and manufacturer) I thought I'd summarize all of my answers into a short article. Please post your thoughts and feedback.

Yes very well explained
Because I know about gloss is better than matt finish for the decals, I once built a Lysander that was going to be all black. So I used gloss black paint then applied decals and used microsol, then finished with a matt varnish all with brushes. I have added a picture to show that I bet you would never know it started out with a gloss finish and as you can see the decals set to the models ridges very well

Nice job. If there's two things to take away from the article that's to be sure to gloss the painted surface or use a glossy paint (a good idea), and that using a solvent makes a difference.
