NEWS: 2020 Modeller of the Year!

Post by Editor » Fri Jan 15, 2021 9:01 am

Today I'm happy to announce Stormo's first ever Modeller of the Year. Exemplifying commitment, high-skill and excellence to the art of modeling and the subject matter. Through his efforts and outstanding contributions over the years Richard Mendes has made Stormo a better place and few would disagree he is Stormo’s 2020 Modeller of the Year!

Please note this isn't an announcement I’ll make every year, it’s just to persons who have contributed greatly to the betterment of this site and worthy of praise and recognition of their efforts and Richard has certainly shown this. In past years Jean Barby would have been our recipient many times over but that goes without saying, and in the spirit of the moment Richard is our outstanding person of the year and much deserved!

Personal Awards have been added to the Gallery.

Thank you Richard!

Thanks For The Honor

Never won a model contest award but glad to bestowed this STORMO Magazine honor given I'd retired from scale modeling with my last build of the 1/72nd scale Italeri Macchi C.202 on December 29, 2020 capping off 59 on-off years of kit building commencing with the reissued 1/64th Revell B-25C/D kit in 1961. Am guessing had constructed near 1,000 models during this time all but couple dozen airplanes, my favorite the 1963-vintage FROG C.202 launching my interest in Italian aviation subjects the following year.

It can be rightly said that even if I'd been my age today in 1964 likely couldn't had constructed either the 1/72nd FROG or Aliplast FIAT G.55 kits (sole 1/72nd Italian aviation subject model kits on the market that year) to standards of those since 2006 given next to no easily obtainable research publications to work from then never mind paints & water decals (latters non existent) having to wait 42 years to begin doing so though meantime missing out on obtaining number of rare kit offerings notably the KPL Models CANT Z.1018 had pined for years to land grubby hands on but couldn't meantime content with assembling over 200 others housed within 73 costly to fabricate custom-built fully dust-proof display cases.

My kit building days are over but not my interest in Italian aviation subjects; well wishes to scale modelers here on STORMO with their modeling projects.

Richard
