Macchi 205V factory rudder section.

Post by potNpans » Fri Jan 29, 2010 4:45 pm

Greetings and salutations to the Stormo forum members. I have a question on the factory logo variations, Aeronautica Macchi and Veltro style. Were they pertinent to series 1 and 3 models or production time line related? Reason I'm asking is for an accurate skin submittable for an online flight SIMM. Thanks for your consideration, Anthony

C.202s had the Aeronautica Macchi logo only, C.205s had the Veltro Script above the Aeronautica Macchi logo for all C.205s Serie I and III except those delierved to the ANR.

C205 Rudder Script

Post by Rick » Sun Jan 31, 2010 9:17 am

Hopining to have correctly understood the question, I invite you to have a look to the C205 352-2, photocolor at page 14-15 of the book "The Messerschmitt 109 in Italian Service" by D'Amico-Valentini; the script on the rudder is:

Aeronautica Macchi
C205 V
SERIE - I

Let's now consider the b/w photo of a C205 of 72° Sq at pag. 215 of the book " Solo coraggio " by C. Dunning: the script is:

"Veltro"
SERIE = I
PV Kg 2534

My opinion is that, concerning the script, each subject is to be analyzed

Thanks for your replies, here are two photographs of the LOGO variation.

Also the "veltro" LOGO does appear on the series I rudders section of C-205 360-3 of the 51 Stormo, Ref. pg. 11 num. 27 of "Ali D' Italia" C.205. Was the "Aeronautica Macchi" script applied to the series III model?

Only a few Serie III C.205Vs were delivered to the Regia Aeronautica, so there aren't a whole lot of photos that show the rudder script. From photos, both styles (with and without the the Aeronautica Macchi logo) appear on the Serie I planes. Some early C.205V Serie I also displayed the abbreviated "Aer. Macchi" script. Gorrini's C.205V Serie III displays the "Veltro" only script. Profiles in Ali e Colori #5 show Co-belligerente C.205V Serie III planes with the "Veltro" only scirpt while others appear to have no script (ie., likely painted over). ANR C.205V Serrie III planes appear with no rudder scripts.

Some additional information:
Serie I Macchi built, MM 9287-9386
Serie III Macchi built, MM 92153-92302
Serie III Macchi built, MM 98218-98517

Vince, thanks very much for the production model numbers relating to series type. It completes the reference material I have that list date of production and to service destination, but did not list which series model.
Thank for the help, Salute
Anthony.
