Are kits from all manufacturers actually the same kit?

Post by Capitano » Fri Dec 12, 2008 11:30 am

The question is, is one model such as the 1/48 Macchi C.200 the same mold but a just new release from other manufacturers? I use the C.200 as an example because PCM released it and then SH released it w/o the p-e detail. (If you don't have the PCM kit, I highly recommend it.) SH also seems to release the same kits that Flying Machines has previously released. In fact, there are posts here that hope SH will release a kit soon after FM does because of cost considerations.

Italeri is a good example a re-releaser. They did it with the Accurate Miniatures Avenger and now plan to re-release a BR-20 made by some one else. Their impending release of the Re.2002 is surely some one else's. Whose?

Is there a site where these variations of the same model can be compared that is better than just a box review where the previous kit is mentioned? A good example would be the 1/48 Fiat G.50. The G.50 has been issued by SH, PCM, Italian Classics, Secter/Hasegawa, and probably others I don't know of. Are they all the same kit? How do you now if you are getting a rehash of the Secter G.50 kit with shallow wheel wells versus a kit like the SH one where they have resin inserts to make up for this lack of detail? Luckily a shop like Venture Hobbies will open the box so you can see whats inside. I can't do that when ordering on-line.

You don't have to limit this discussion on the C.200 or the G.50. Obviously the SM.79 made by Trumpeter and the SM.79 made by CA are two distinct kits. But if Italeri ever releases a SM.79 you can be assured that it is going to be one or the other manufacturers previous products.

Italeri does have their own 1:72 scale SM-79 kits, which are their own molds. The PCM G.50 is a reboxing of the Secter/Hasegawa G.50, with resin detail parts and canopies for either the Spanish Civil War Serie I or the G.50bis/AS depending on which boxing you have (wasn't there also a Finnish boxing?). I have both Flying Machines and Special Hobby boxings of the G.50 and the G.55, and the plastic parts do look the same to me, but I haven't opened the bags and done a comparison. As far as I know, the Italian Classic G.50 is a resin kit that they molded.

As for the C.200, the Special Hobby boxing is nice because it gives you the enclosed canopy for early C.200s that none of the PCM boxings have. Astrokit made really nice resin C.200s and there is an early Classic Airframes C.200.

The Italeri Br.20 is one of their older molds that gets reissued from time to time, and there are kits in their catalog that are Supermodel molds (never been sure if this was a separate company or a label that Italeri used). There is a set with the Supermodel label that contains the Italeri CR.42 and a Autoblinda. Tamiya issued the Italeri CR.42 in Japan with some diorama accessories.

That's all I can recall at this point; I hope others will add to this if I've missed something or gotten something wrong. And I hope this information helps.

Best wishes,
Brendan

The Italeri RE.2002 will be completely new, if it get released. The only 1/48 kit before that was the E.P Original resin kit, which is a long time OOP.

The recent Special Hobby 1/48 G.50 and G.55 kits use the same moulds as the FM kits. The Secter/Hasegawa G.50 does not. The PCM G.50 was the Secter/Hasegawa kit with added resin parts to improve parts of the Secter known to be wrong, especially the cowling. Misterkit did a whole new resin wing with separate aileron/flap parts for the Secter kit. The Italian Classic range of 1.48 G.50 complete resin kits had fantastics levels of detail but is suited for experienced modellers only.

Classic Airframe and SH are supposed to be sharing the same tooling for the 1.48 Br.20.

Flashback released a S.79 kit that used the same moulds as the CA kit, but with extra detail. I would have thought that Italeri would do their own tooling for a 1/48 kit, as they did for their very nice range of S.79 1/72 kits.

I think there are enough website around that at least give you some idea of whats inside any new releases.
