The style of unit codes is very distinctive. I'd like to portray 278-1 as seen in the Osprey torpedo-bomber book. Is there a source for unit code numbers?

I don't think there's an aftermarket sheet for the 1/48 S.79. The problem with all 1/48 bombers (not just the RA) is the sheer size of the decals in that size that make it difficult to add more than a few subjects. Even the old Skymodel's 1/72 S.79 sheet only manged to fit a few subjects on an over-sized sheet.

Here's What I've Found...

eBay Classic Airframes decals 1/48 Kit# 462 Savoia Marchetti SM79 Sparviero L79

1/48th decals for "278-3"; vendor says he has "10 Available" but I'd act fast! Don't know if the font style is same as in the Osprey book, like number of "Italians" I'd build over the years made do with what had available or could timely get. The "1" in 278-1 you possibly can fabricate from whatever 1/48th scale decal collection y'all may have, check serif on top to see if straight or curved.

Thank you, "Retired." I think the "7" is close enough, and there's a "1" on the sheet that's also close. I also found a sheet with "Electric Man" and "the 4 cats" for a future project. A good source for future reference.

Some more info, SKY Models produced the sheet below in 1/48 (SKY 48-018). Pacific Coast Models once carried the sheet but I don't know what PCM is doing these days (they were located in Santa Rosa California and Ken Lawrence sold the company and is now retried). Check ebay and it might be worth a shot to contact PCM online if they still have a sheet or two. If you find the sheet above I would mask the "1" for exactness or match as best you can as Richard suggested.

Any numbers are easy to make using a Silhouette portrait. You scan your subject in JPEG from decal, profile or something else, reduce to the size you need and vectorised the result to a neat vinyl mask. It is true for the wings insignias too and the paint on looks the part better than decals. There are many tutos on you tube, just check.

Oh My...

...Need the Classic Airframes #462 mainwing outline tri-fasci decals for the BroPlan Savoia-Marchetti SM.95 build late this year, bought one off eBay tonight. I have a few 1/48 Italian aviation subject section-cut decals will need to dispose of "to a good home" gratis including the Classic Airframes one, let me know davenport49 if you're interested.
