I am building Sword's G.55 2in1 1/72nd kit. My knowledge of the G.55 is pretty much 0. The rear of the hinged canopy confuses me in relation to the shape of the fuselage spine. They obviously do not match each other. Is there framing at the rear of the canopy that closes it out to match the spine?

There was no rear frame or metal sheet that was attached to the rear of the canopy to fit the dorsal fairing. Photos below of the canopy in the open and closed position from the rear side. The scalloped fairings were used to see rearward of the plane. The armored headrest was separate from the armored seat which was adjustable in the y, z-axis.

Thank you for the photo reference! The kit's headrest is a separate piece. It seemed unusual to me with that scalloped section.

I can't add to the specific G.55 answer already given, but this was a very typical detail of Italian fighters of the era. The Macchi C.202 and C.205, and Reggiane Re.2000, Re.2001, Re.2002, and Re.2005 also had canopies open at the rear to a scalloped spine fairing.
