GROUP II PLASTIC MODEL BUILDS ARE COMPLETE

Build Progress Reports Will Be Continuously Posted Here, Photos Of Built Models Will Be On Separate Postings

The FROG, Hasegawa, Italeri & SUPERMODEL Macchi C.202 1/72 scale injected plastic model kits of the Folgore are decades-old none of which in production though all are still available on the secondary market albeit sporadically. The 2001-vintage Italeri 1222 C.202 kit is the most recent new-tooled Folgore kit the last rerelease of it in 2013, it and the 2001-vintage Italeri 1227 Macchi C.205V are derived from common molds similar to the 1970s-vintage SUPERMODEL C.202/205 kits.

The sole Italeri C.202 kit I had in stock was used as a parts donor for building the resin SEM Model Macchi C.204 (see above post), having saved unused parts from it will "bash" a C.202 from my last in-stock Italeri C.205V kit:

Italeri Macchi C.202 "Recovery Bash" With C.202 & C.205 Kit Parts Model Complete, See Post Below

March 9, 2020

The Hasegawa Macchi C.202 51302 (1992) 51618/SP118 (1993), 51381/AP121 (1995), 00045 (1999), 00662 (2003) 00992 Combo (2010) 1/72 scale injected-molded plastic model kit arguably is the best molded though no longer most detailed compared to Italeri's newer kit of any in this scale of the Folgore, differing only by water decal sheets none are in production though all are still available on the secondary market albeit sporadically. The Hobby 2000 72005 Combo with Bristol Beaufighter Ic, 72006, 72007, 72008 C.202 kits available since 2019 appear to be rebranded Hasegawa C.202s with new decal sheets, how long they're in production is uncertain, wise indeed to buy them now whilst available!

Three 1992-vintage Hasegawa 51302 kits will be concurrently built, one with Eduard 72369 etched brass detailing parts another with True Detail 72462 cockpit and/or with 72035 main landing gear wheel set resin detailing parts. An extra two sets of resin wheels are available for detailing from an unknown manufacturer may/may not use them for the kits builds.

Hasegawa Macchi C.202 "Eduard" Model Complete, See Post Below

April 7, 2020

The 1963-vintage FROG Aeronautica Macchi C.202 was the first 1/72 scale injected plastic kit of the Folgore, clunky well as inaccurate it nevertheless is easy to build, out of production since the mid-1970s affordable aftermarket kits are still available.

All my previous "What-If" FROG C.202 models with early 1943 C.205N-1 style fuselage-wing root-mounted Breda-SAFAT 12.7mm machine gun packs utilizing SUPERMODEL FIAT CR.32 wing-mounted machine gun blisters were in pre-June 1940 Regia Aeronautica Italiana (RAI) liveries & markings well as wartime extensions thereof assuming Folgori entered RAI service early in 1940, the next three well as my last-ever FROG kit builds will be in post-June 1940 RAI Tavola X livery & markings, one in a colorful though not without precedent "What-If" livery. Two of the kits are 1963-1974 FROG releases third a 1964 AIR LINES release:

That's one heck of a collection. Notice how much larger the C.206 is. I like the engine and mount you added to the C.206.

...Y'all mean the C.207  Daimler-Benz DB 603 engine & mount were kit provided I'd added resin exhausts from parts bin, nylon fishing string magneto wire leads. Engine very nice though too large, 15% or so smaller to get supercharger "snail" inside the port bearer; bears gluing bearer pieces together  should had been molded one piece, whomever else builds this model needs to know to leave off the "snail" if they want to firewall mount the engine! I may need to fabricate a display stand for the engine, still thinking on this.

Balaton Modell SM.75 Build Will Be Regia Aeronautica Italia Version

Post by RetiredInKalifornia » Tue Mar 10, 2020 3:55 am

The 1/72 scale Balaton Modell Savoia-Marchetti SM.75 resin kit build will be the Regia Aeronautica Italia version, this after researching building the Hungarian one apparently in German RLM 61, 62, 63, 65 "export" livery colors proved too expensive insofar as buying & shipping to me either enamel or acrylic paints, building the kit will commence during April 2020.

I prefer painting with enamels, Testors Model Master 2075 RLM 61 & 2076 RLM 62 enamels supposedly are available, 2077 RLM 63 isn't. Acrylics in near all RLM colors are available but expensive, that along with chronic fear they'd peel off whilst masking model parts for painting over slick resin surfaces even after priming, issues I'd had with every resin or plastic painted kit had built in the past.

Unarmed aircraft appears to be a early civil serving with 602 Squadriglia before painting on white belly band, might be able to piece together water decals from stores.

The FIAT G.12T per CMPR & VITO Charts camouflage & paint research isn't a kosher build, frankly didn't appreciate that till after I'd build the dang thing   Despite it being inaccurate liked how it came out, that along with having been a difficult kit build, one I had to build for my 1/72 scale Regia Aeronautica Italiana (RAI) collection, was glad I did given SEM Models has gone out of business!

By September this year should have built all my Italian aircraft kits in stock, will begin disposing more of my 1/72 scale RAI decals well as some of my Italian aircraft research publications. I'd sooner give them directly to modelers like you than try to sell them, items I can't give away due to lack of interest will "donate" to Viking Hobbies in Sacramento assuming they're still in business over the next couple of years.

Last Ever Hasagawa Aeronautica Macchi C.202 Models Shown Above...

Post by RetiredInKalifornia » Mon Apr 06, 2020 10:04 pm

...But not of Folgori, FROG "What-If" builds follow, see above Group II Plastics: Hasegawa, Italeri, FROG "What-If" Macchi C.202s post for progress reporting well as on the Beyond The Sprues website. Any future Folgori builds will be of the Italeri kit, are hard to come by but if price is right will buy one or two well as another C.205V kit to fill up a display case.

The Hasegawa "Eduard" model fulfills a decades-old desire inspired by PROFILE Publications No.28 wanting to build the "perfect" Folgore in 79º Squadriglia North African livery c. winter-spring 1942, though not entirely "perfect" it indeed does fulfill it curiously during the 2019-2020 Coronavirus Pandemic, gravest since the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu though not anywhere near as deadly as the latter.
