...Sorely wanted to paint it per period photos of prototype but BroPlan kit didn't have decals for it, did have (unusable) decals to build camouflaged version per kit painting instructions presumably based on BroPlan research how the 13 production aircraft would had been painted; speculative but best I could do with extemely limited Internet info regarding the aircraft.

Send in a write up and note the color scheme is assumed. It's still a great build and good addition for the Gallery.

BroPlan MS-193 Savoia-Marchetti SM.95

The Savoia-Marchetti SM.95 wood, steel & fabric-constructed four-engine mid-range transport aircraft conceived in 1937 was meant to succeeded the venerable three-engine Savoia-Marchetti SM.75 but did not fly till May 8, 1943. Two aircraft were constructed & flown operationally during WWII by the Regia Aeronautica Italiana & Deutsches Luftwaffe, 18 more purportedly build post-war, 5 serving with the Aeronautica Militare till 1953.

The 2016-vintage 1/72 scale BroPlan MS-193 & MS-192 Savoia Marchett SM.95 & SM.95C (Civile) vacuform styrene plastic kits with injected-plastic detail parts are the only ones available in any scale, largest in dimensional size of any Italian aircraft model in that scale as well the Special Hobby Piaggio P.108 & Cunarmodel P.108T Conversion kits coming in as close runners-up. Though near impossible to find on March 19. 2018 was miraculously able to buy one MS-193 SM.95 post-WWII military version kit off the Internet “at a good price” intending to construct it in WW-II livery, vacuform molded in several sections it will be the most complicated and challenging Italian aircraft model build ever attempted:

Because of ongoing forum software malfunctioning build progress report postings hereon will be centered on major model assembly units rather than a daily chronology of building activity.

October 16-22, 2020

Fuselage Assembly Work Pre-Halve Joining:

- > All Fuselage halve parts cut from mold sheets, knife-trimmed & edge-sanded.

- > Cabin door scribed on port fuselage cut out & saved, fuselage edges knife trimmed & filed.

- > Fuselage halve cockpit canopy & windscreen molded plastic areas cut out clear vacuform plastic canopy & windscreen part replacing them.

- > Fuselage halves molded in fore & aft parts, kit instructions assume assembling halve parts into fore & aft units joined together, not practical, aft unit too wide around fuselage sides & top, halve parts alternatively knife-trimmed & longitudinally joined together, fill puttied & extensively shape-sanded all whilst in constant fear of irreparably tearing joins around upper fuselage sides & tops, acceptable results though barely!

- > Al fuselage cabin window areas cut out, edges knife & file-shaped, windows fabricated from clear styrene sheet plastic & glued In place, some fill puttying necessary, OK results.

- > Fuselage pass-through mainwing support brace holes cut out, edges knife & file-shaped.

- > Fuselage halves need positioning & alignment tabs whilst gluing them together, fabricated tab sections from styrene sheet plastic, glued them in place inside & all along port fuselage halve edges, fuselage halve join alignment test fits then made, port halve cockpit area misaligned, plastic cut out to better align with starboard halve cockpit area, starboard windscreen area too short, cut plastic out to be symmetrical with port, OK results.

- > All kit cockpit & fuselage bulkhead parts cut from mold sheets & injection sprues, knife, filed & sand-shaped.

- > Fuselage bulkhead door cut out (not saved), knife & file-shaped, cockpit deck glued on bulkhead, assembled unit glue-held in place on port fuselage halve with three L-shaped positioning tabs cut from styrene sheet plastic, tricky work, good deal of starboard bulkhead edge knife & sand-shaping necessary to clear starboard fuselage halve, OK results.

- > Fuselage pass-through mainwing support brace parts cut from mold sheets & glue-assembled, extensive shape-sanding necessary, brace test fitted within fuselage halves, starboard fuselage halve brace hole cut out farther aft for better perpendicular brace positioning relative to general fuselage halve longitudinal alignment, OK results.

- > Kit lacked fuselage passenger cabin floor, fabricated basic one from styrene sheet plastic, extensively knife & shape-sanded to fit inside fuselage halves, low profile rectangular positioning tab cut from styrene sheet plastic, glued in place on port fuselage bottom, cabin floor then glued on top aft floor end over fuselage positioning & alignment tab, OK results.

- > All fuselage halve interiors & glued-in parts spray painted base spray painted Testors Model Master 1726 Light Sea Gray enamel approximating color Savoia-Marchetti employed in painting aircraft interiors, bottom areas aft of bulkhead to pass-through mainwing support brace spray painted Testors Flat Black & White “special mix” for better visual aesthetics looking in from cockpit windscreen & canopy windows.

- > All kit pilot & co-pilot injected plastic seat frames spray & hand-painted Testors Flat Aluminum, seat covers Rust enamels (no seat belts fabricated, insufficient information as to placement & type), seats glued in place on cockpit floor.

- > All cockpit instrument/engine controls panels & control column plastic-inject parts glued together (cut styrene plastic support wedge glued behind engine controls panel) base spray painted “special mix”.

- > Control columns glued in place on cockpit floor in front of seats.

- > Kit lacked rudder pedals, fabricated sets from styrene sheet plastic, spray painted Flat Aluminum, glued in place on cockpit floor behind control columns, good results.

- > Instrument/engine controls panels assembly hand-brushed detailed Testors Flat White enamel, glued in place on cockpit floor, good results.

Group V - BroPlan Vacuform Builds - Part VII

Post by RetiredInKalifornia » Tue Oct 27, 2020 7:11 pm

October 24-27, 2020

Fuselage Assembly Unit Complete

- > All fuselage, rudder & sail seam edges sand-shaped & finished, much spot-puttying, several sanding passes necessary, tedious laborious work, acceptable results though barely.

- > Clear vacuform styrene plastic canopy-windscreen unit knife-cut from mold sheet, knife-cut trimmed & sand-shaped to fit over fuselage canopy, tedious laborious work, OK results.

- > Many canopy-windscreen unit test fits over fuselage cockpit area, port fuselage windscreen line too far forward, cut-shaped styrene plastic shim glued in place, seams extensively putty-filled & sand-shaped, acceptable canopy-windscreen unit edge test fits.

- > Canopy-windscreen unit glued over fuselage cockpit area, edges masked-off, puttied & sand-shaped, acceptable results.

- > Canopy-windscreen unit window areas masked-off, entire unit spray painted Testors Model Master 1726 Light Sea Gray enamel approximating color Savoia-Marchetti employed in painting aircraft interiors.

- > Fore & aft fuselage halve part join areas spray painted Light Sea Gray to spot inperfections, number found, none warranting additional puttying & sanding work.

- > Assembled kit tailplane seam edges sand-shaped & finished, much spot-puttying, several sanding passes necessary, tedious laborious work, acceptable results though barely.

- > Tailplane-fuselage butt-ends extensively knife-cut, sand-shaped, test fitted on fuselage, several sanding passes necessary, tedious laborious work, tailplanes glued on fuselage, OK x-y-z axis alignments & fits.

- > All tailplane-fuselage seams puttied & sand-shaped, OK results.

October 28-31, 2020

- > All mainwing halve parts cut from mold sheets, knife-trimmed & edge-sanded, glued together, edges extensively puttied.

- > Puttied edges laboriously & extensively shape-sanded, much re-puttying & sanding necessary around wingtips & aft wingroots latters requiring extensive knife-shaping & re-enforcing with cut styrene plastic shims.

- > Vacuform molded mainwing butt-ends cut out, extensively shape-sanded & test fitted on fuselage assembly unit, good flush fits, no noticale gaps.

- > All engine nacelles cut from mold sheets, rough knife-trimmed for later fine cut & shape-sanding work, inboard nacelle landing gear well doors cut to flower-open, fingers crossed they'll not break off!

- > Nacelles need retaining & positioning tabs, sets cut from styrene sheet plastic, glued on right side inboard engine nacelle halves forward of landing gear well edges.

- > Two circular engine firewall vacuform parts knife-trimmed & shape-sanded, "keyed" in inboard nacelle halves & test fitted, halves forward of landing gear well edges to firewalls glued together.

- > Partially assembled inboard engine nacelles set aside, resuming work on them tomorrow, photos later when all nacelles are glued on mainwings.
