My Tangerine Dream

Today's world make me feel depressed. Hence I'm tired with all those bombs and guns - and I started new build (actually it's my Day four). It's quite big, it's Italian (well...to some degree.... ;-) ), no guns, no bombs - and it will be orange in color.... And 1/32 scale. Why not? ;-)

I think I know what your dream will be although I don't think they grow tangerines in Texas. As usual, a pro job on the cockpit interior. Looking forward to this build.

So your hints suggest this is a T-6, right? A subject close to my heart, as my earliest memories are my dad as a civilian instructor for the USAF in T-6. The work and level of detail is beautiful.

I did not know this and very interesting. If you like, do a write-up on this plane and brief bio of your dad as an instructor and I'd happily post it on Stormo in the History section. I can't tell you how many times we get authors on this site looking for information, and highlighting areas like this + bios always generates interest. We need to keep the memory of these airmen going. The mighty USAF.

And that's my plan. Photo found on targeta.co.uk webpage. So far I've collected all markings, lettering etc. combining different decals sets.

I wish I could provide a detailed bio. Unfortunately, preserving family history was not our strong suit. We lived in Lakeland, Fl, from about '54 to '59 while Dad worked at Bartow AFB as instructor in AT-6 Texans. He started his aviation career as a crop duster post-WWII. He spent 20+ years with the FAA (originally the Civil Aeronautics Administration), including a number of years interfacing with Boeing in Seattle, where he earned the 1st pilot's license for the 747. He died in '92 at the age of 69. These are the only 2 photos I have of his time in Bartow, wearing the baseball cap (which interestingly says "Piper").

Those are great photos, especially the first one. You're dad had the Tom Cruise smile - the first photo could have been used on the front cover of a recruitment magazine. Each pilot has a story to tell, it was and is a remarkable profession, limited to a few. Thank you for sharing Richard.

It grows... slowly... This Kitty Hawk kit is not easy. Fit of the parts is generally good but I don't like this plastic - it's milky, semi translucent and brittle. Today I spent several hours fitting five canopy pieces together. They are perfectly clean and very, very thin - almost like vacuum formed. One mistake - and it cracks. So much emotions. And people think that modelling is just for fun and to calm down yourself ;-)

Canopy masked, almost ready for priming and painting.
