Macchi C.200 Saetta in Greece

Post by Andreas » Sat Nov 27, 2010 8:56 am

A warm hello to all friends and specialists of Regia Aeronautica history.

I´m intending to build a model of Macchi C.200 Saetta plane, used within the Greek campaign 1940-41. I have started to collect some data regarding the Italian units in active duty there.
According to the results so far following Squadriglias were in action at the Greek front: 372, 372, 374 and 370; all of them equipped with MC 200 planes; later the Squadriglias 73 and 371 followed.

So I have following questions:

1. Which other Squadriglias using MC 200 were in action in Greece?
2. Which versions of MC 200 were used in Greece? Particularly: were those all planes with “bubble canopy”, or were also some planes with open cockpit used in Greece?

Some more questions will follow, but it would be great if someone could answer the above ones.

Could someone post a picture showing Macchi C.200 Saetta plane in Greece ?

Hello Andreas and wlecome to Stormo.

There were quiet a few units equipped with the C.200 in Greece including mixed formations of C.42s and C.200s:

4a Squadra Aerea

153o Gruppo
372a Sq.
373a Sq.
374a Sq.

Aeronautica dell'Albania
150o Gruppo Aut CT
363a Sq.
364a Sq.
365a Sq.

160o Gruppo
371a Sq.

22o Gruppo
359a Sq.
362a Sq.
369a Sq.

2a Squdra Aerea
9o Gruppo
73a Sq.
96a Sq.
97a Sq.

10o Gruppo
84a Sq.
90a Sq.
91a Sq.

7o Gruppo
76a Sq.
86a Sq.
98a Sq.

16o Gruppo
167a Sq.
168a Sq.
169a Sq.

A combination of different C.200s variants were used in Greece, including Serie I (bubble canopy) and Serie II (open cockipt) and later variants. You might want to get a copy of Regia Aeronuatica Caccia & Assalto (Waldis, De Bortoli and Brioschi) for some good profiles of these planes in Greece. There should be photos of C.200s in Greece in ADI #8.

Vince, thank you!

I was looking for the mentioned Waldis / De Bortoli book, but to pay EUR 64 for 81 pages seems to be not very attractive. Actually I would appreciate just one picture (or camo scheme) showing a C.200 in the Greek campaign.

Would it be possible for you to send me a corresponding scan of one picture to my e-mail address - or just post it here in forum?

Andreas
