Macchi C.200 over Malta?

Post by davenport49 » Tue Nov 17, 2020 8:11 am

I'm looking at the excellent Pacific Coast model of the Macchi C.200and want to know, did it ever operate over Malta? And if so, are there decals out there to portray one such aircraft? Thanks for any help.

There's the old Aeromaster decal sheet 48-154 that has two subjects that flew over Malta, see below. There's also the SkyModels 1/48 sheet 48-021 that have many different subjects and include planes that flew over Malta. You should be able to find both on ebay.

Hello Richard,

If I were doing a Macchi 200 in the Malta campaign, my choice would definitely be The aircraft of Franco Lucchin!
He gained most of his kills in Malta with a Macchi 200.

Thanks for the input, Vincent. The link image is excellent. I think it's a pretty solid choice.

Niagara on the Lake is a beautiful area; I've wanted to attend the Shaw Festival for years. One of these days.....

A very good suggestion from Vince, you can find Franco Lucchini in 48001 (now long out of print), try the usual ebay.

Here's Jean's build of Lucchini's plane:

A good news/bad news situation - I can't find the Stormo sheet, but the AeroMaster sheet is already on its way. It's just as well, with kits and decals, I've dropped a bundle on this project this week. I have no idea how I'll explain this to my wife! :shh:

If there's a particular one on the AeroMaster sheet you recommend, let me know.

Thanks for the input, guys.

81-12
Three tone camo scheme. Note the yellow (under) wing-tips typical of the Russian front. This plane was transferred to 22o Gruppo and was then transferred along with the unit to Russia in 1942 so its unlikely the plane carried the yellow wing tips when 81a Sq. operated over Malta in early 1941. This plane was also equipped with cameras on the leading edges of the wings. Light gray/pale blue front-side props and rear side props painted matt black. Extended white tail cross unique to units that operated from Malta in the first half of 1941. White (under) wing fasces with black background.

167-6
167a Sq started out life as a ground attack unit under 50o Stormo later converting to the C.200 and joining 54o Stormo in March 1941 and began sorties over Malta escorting bombers and fighter sweeps followed by a long tour of shipping escort in the surroundings waters.

Help!

I'm working on the Pacific Coast Models Macchi C.200. I've built the Vector resin Fiat A-74 engine. As far as I can see, there's no way in the world to get the engine inside the kit's resin cowling (even the kit's less detailed engine won't fit). Does anyone have a solution? :?

Richard try PMing Jean (D520) I'm pretty sure he used the Vector A-74 on his C.200s.
