Question about 11th Squadriglia Folgore

Hello,

I have Bill Gunston's Combat Aircraft of World War II at home, and it has a color profile of a Folgore from the 11th Squadriglia in a green base scheme with dark green mottling. Is this an accurate profile? I've never seen a green base on a Regia Aeronautica plane except for the IMAM Ro. 37. Thanks for any advice!

CMPR says the C4 camo scheme was only applied to the C.200. Check the Stormo Color Guide.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know why I didn't think to check the color guide, but now I'll never forget. I may make a Folgore with that scheme just for fun, because it's really attractive to my eye.

Hello Brendan,
Below an image of a MC.202 in the "Metropolitana" scheme. The image is from ADI#2 but is curiously missing in ADI#22. My personal opinion is that the plane is finished in Nocciola Chiaro splotches over VOS2. Send me some pics of your model when its done.

Thanks for the picture. I don't have the book on hand right now, but I believe that the profile in question is taken from that photo. The tan splotches over dark green would be handsome, too; this would make good practice for RA camo schemes, which intimidate me no end!

Hi this camo is probably "mistake-interpretatoin" of new camo scheme. NC4 blotches over VOS2. Conseqently its use was limited to thirty Mc 202 (MM 7821 - 7850) from serie III by Macchi.

Hi Mirek,

Do you mean that the persons applying the paint misunderstood the directions and put the tan splotches over a green base, when they were supposed to put green splotches over the tan base?

Yes I do. This Mc 202 were build in first month 1942. Reason this interpretation of new camo specifications is still unclear. Some Mc200s from this period had the same camo. That camo reminds Fiats latest camo used on Cr 42, G50 and prototypes G55, but with smaller blotches.

There is no misinterpretation.The Tavola 10 with the new colors introduced in autumn 1941 foresaw this kind of camouflage on the airplane to be used in North Africa: you can see the application notes (in Italian) numer 147 and 148; only later in June 1942 a disposition was issued that stated the Verde Oliva scuro mottles on the background Nocciola Chiaro
