Did CR42CN night fighters have NatL markings on wings?

Post by hike65 » Thu Dec 23, 2010 1:54 pm

Hello,
I'm building a CR42CN night fighter from 167 Gruppo Autonomo as
illustrated on page 32 of squadron in action CR32/42 with cowling that
reads " I can't sleep tonight". Perhaps bottom wings had white outline
marking but hopefully had same on top wings? Any ideas? Also in this
photo I don't think A/C was black. Looks like a charcoal grey or 36118?
Anyway, any information appreciated. Thanks, Phil

Cr42 nightfighters

It is not easy to find photos that show the wings upper surfaces of dark camouflaged Cr42s; the most of the photos I know have no insigna on the upper surfaces; for instance no insigna is visible on the upper wings of the 377-4 at Palermo-Boccadifalco at the end of 1942.
For the color to be used for camouflage, please, have a look on color guide section; some time ago I prepared a short not on this matter present in this section.
My best wishes
Riccardo

Sometime yes sometime no!!!
You can see a picture of CR42 CN (161 gruppo based in Rhodes in 1941) with national insigna on the uper surface of the uper wings on page 41 of the book "Colori et insegne" Reggia aeronautica Caccia et assalto 1940-1941.
On this picture you can see the roundels are blacks (whitout white background) and more darkness than the wings colours.
Here a link to Stormo's article with that picture.

Sorry for my poor english, I hope you undestand my answer.
