RA use of fasces wing insignia

Post by davenport49 » Mon Jan 11, 2021 12:08 pm

Is there a definitive guide on the RA's use of wing insignia?

For my 1/48th Fiat CR.42 I've concluded I need to use those with white backgrounds. But do I use the simplified fasces

, or the more elaborate

?

Do I use the Italeri ones at 19mm, or the SkyModels at 20mm? Or maybe because the wings have different chords, 20mm on the top and 19mm on the bottom?

Can anyone help?

The wing fasce at the top of your post was used by Fiat and the lower one (elaborate with a thin handle) was used by AerMacchi, the two are often confused. The diameter of the wing fasces were as follows (foglio d'ordini 9.7.1936):

Large planes such as bombers:
1,800mm or 37.5mm in 1/48

Medium sized aircraft such as reconnaissance planes:
1,200mm or 25mm in 1/48

Smaller aircraft such as fighters:
960mm or 20mm in 1/48

I should add this information to the Color Guide.

Thank you, Vince. Very helpful.

Would this information get lost somewhere in the Color Guide? I suspect would want to know this.

I'll have to add a new heading "Insignia and Markings". If you look at the Color Guide now its grown past just a color and camouflage guide over the years and a section for markings makes sense especially since questions like the one asked is a good one and very easy for modelers to make a mistake. The Color Guides, including Stefanos are frequently visited.

And thanks again for everything I'm learning here - I'm having a blast!

Ok, NEXT frustration - the only 20mm I have are the AerMacchi style. Checking the Stormo decals, it LOOKS like Aces Part I might have the ones I need. What do you think, Vince?

Glad you're enjoying Stormo Richard. I would use the 19mm you already have.
