Reggiane RE2001 358 squadron number colors

Post by tanker149805 » Sun Sep 11, 2022 3:13 pm

Looking through my Ali D'Italia RE2001 Vol 3, I have a question on squadron number color. The bottom photo on page 28 shows a RE2001 assigned to 358 squadron supposedly piloted by SGM Giovanni Dringoli. Is this Squadron number (358) in white, gray, or light blue? The squadron number doesn`t look white to me. I`m guessing gray or light blue. I know that there was no official RA directive on unit number colors, and all three colors were used. Thanks to all.

The squadron (squadriglia) number "358" is a light blue and the individual aircraft number '7' is red.

Orthochromatic film used during the period is sensitive to blues and greens and appear lighter in black and white photos while reds appear darker (almost black). The same plane appears on p.29 and next to other 358a Sq. planes where the individual aircraft number is clearly red. Use the background of the fuselage fasces (the circular disc) and the white fuselage band to compare the color of the squadriglia number.
