macchi mc 202 aces teresio martinoli camouflage patches

Post by stefanuccio » Tue May 12, 2009 4:27 pm

i am building an hasegawa 1/48 macchi 202 aces .
i would liketo represent the aircraft of serg.magg. teresio martinoli but i am unsure about painting the camouflage patches .
is it better to pain the patches with airbrush freehand or should i use timplates?are the edges hard edged or smoked? what is the best way to achieve this particular camouflage effect?
grazie ciao a tutti

Ciao Stefano,
Here's a construction article of Martinoli's machine:

http://www.stormomagazine.com/ModelArti ... _VT_1.html

You'll need to choose a good paint and use a good airbrush. If you can do the mottles free hand I think you'll do a better job of representing the mottles as they were, ie, soft edged. You can try a template if you feel more comfortable and I don't think there's anything wrong with that approach. To do the mottles free-hand you'll need to use a dual-action airbrush which gives you some control of the amount of paint that can be applied. Good paints to use are Gunze Sangyo (a JeanB favorite), Mr.Kit, WEM, Lacquers. I've also used Polly Scale paints to do mottles. Thinning paints is the key so that you can spray small amounts. Lacquers are better than enamels and enamles are generally better than acrylics. Each type of paint has its advantages and disadvantages.

to find good or accurate paint in south africa for modelling purposes is also not that easy

thanks for your suggestions which prove how much valid and supportive stormomagazine is for us modellers enthusiast of italian air force scattered arounr the world

Stefano,
That has always been a tough question to answer.
I would go with verde anticorrosione, but I am sure that this will start a debate.
Vincent.

Stefano,
I'm pretty sure Martinoli's machine was finished with an upper surface of Nocciola Chiaro + VOS splothces. The key is the date in which his plane was photographed and the time his unit received its C.202s ie., late 1942 - well past the introduction of the Tavola X colors.

Stefano,

don't believe that painting Martinoli's aircraft with Giallo Mim 3 is necessarily a mistake! According to Giovanni Massimello, MM 7764 was the first 202 which received the new camo in Aermacchi factory (to confirm this, note that spots are rather irregular compared to other Macchi-built serie III aircraft). It is likely that factories used stocks of old paints for their aircraft. Sand colour appears quite light in the only two known photos of this aircraft. Officially, Macchi previously used Giallo Mim 4, while Breda used Giallo Mim 3, but the latter (Arson-SISI Giallo 53194) was so widely diffused that it's not impossible it had been applied on 73-4.
Also, the Nocciola Chiaro 4 as we know it was surely used in late period of war. I've seen an original paint chip from a shot-down and buried ANR MC 205: it was identical to FS30129. But some colour photos suggest that the "official" NC4 earlier in the War was perhaps much lighter than it. See elsewhere in this forum.
A final note: green spots in those examples were "negative": the aircraft were officially painted dark green, and the sand yellow was sprayed on it as to leave small mottles, as per official indications for those aircraft which had to be employed in the desert. This was true for Macchi and Breda-built fighters at least until late 1942.

Ciao

ciao stefano sempre in gamba
thank you for clarify "perfectly" this issue as it shows how difficult and complicated the matters related to the ww2 colour schemes are for the modeller/historian of the regia aeronautica
as a matter of curiosity i would like to ask if possible to know how the smoked rings were obtained on the macchi 202/205
were the rings painted over an overall coat of nocciola chiaro 4?
were the rings hard or soft edged?
i am also interested as on my building list i have a folgore which i am planning to paint in the version of 88 squadriglia precisely the no.9 aircraft which i think belonged to maresciallo gianlino baschirotto
can you give me any suggestion on how to approach this particular folgore project?
ciao scipione l' africano......... sorry i meant

salutissimi
