Mike Starmer's Regia Aeronautica Humbrol Paint Mixes

Post by Aeroal » Tue Feb 09, 2010 8:58 am

Vince,

With Mike Starmer's kind permission, as requested, I attach his list of mixes using currently available Humbrol paints, for Regia Aeronautica colours.

Mike is an acknowledged expert in both military and aviation paint colours and I would suggest that anyone interested take a look at his last three 'On Target Special' co-authored books by Aviation Workshop Publications : 'Wings of Stars' - USAAC colours between the wars, 'Wings and Waves' - British Fleet Air Arm colours between the wars and 'Wings of Silver' - RAF biplane colours between the wars. I would thoroughly recommend these colour profile books to all. But be warned. They lead to the unexpected purchase of yet more kits!

I hope this is of use to all who would prefer to mix using Humbrol. I think the Giallo Mimetico 3 mix given is the only authentic representation of this colour available in enamel paints. Mike recommends that the mixes are not altered. When the paint dries, it will assume its correct hue and tone.

For Scale Colour, he suggests lightening the colour by the addition of Hu64 grey, or in the case of grey based colours Hu34 white. For 1:72 scale add 1 part Hu64 or Hu34 to 6 parts colour. For 1:48 scale add 1 part Hu64 or Hu34 to 8 parts colour and for 1:32 scale add 1 Part Hu64 or Hu34 to 10 parts colour.

I would once again like to thank Mike Starmer for kindly allowing me to show his colour specifications on 'Stormo'.

Regards,

Aeroal.

Thanks Aeroal, great post. I'll try out the Giallo Mimetico 3 mix FS33434 4xHu154+1xHu93+1xHu90. WEM GM3 is pretty good also. I've always liked Humbrol paints.

Mike Starmer's Regia Aeronautica Humbrol Paint Mixes.

Vince,

I bought three tins of the WEM Giallo Mimetico 3 and I was disappointed to find that the yellow was too bright, almost an identification yellow. The Humbrol mix given is toned down from this, and having used it on my CR42, I feel it looks just right when mottled with Marrone and Verde.

I have used Humbrol since 1957 and have grown up with it. It is just part of my comfort zone, being readily available in Scotland.

Regards,

Aeroal.

Are there mixes for Tamiya paints? It's the one that's the easiest for me to obtain. Does anyone know which Tamiya colours would be close enough without mixing?

Without having to mix Tamiya colors, try XF-54 - FS36320/36270. Polly Scale GAC is probably the closest to the CMPR color chips.
