SAI-Ambrosini-Lago Trasimeno-Eleuteri airfield

Post by Jim Betts » Sat Jul 17, 2010 10:47 pm

I am visiting the Cortona-Lago Trasimeno area in October. I have been there before, but apart from noticing the abandonned SAI Ambrosini factory at Passignano sul Trasimeno, & driving past Eleuteri airfield near Castiglione del Lago, I had overlooked any aviation significance of the area.
From Wilipedia, I note that there is a memorial to the test pilot Ambrogio Colombo, killed testing the Ambrosini SS.4 (7 March 1939). Eleuteri was once a major airfield. I think that Macchi as well as Ambrosini aircraft were tested there and it was probably also a Regia Aeronautica & Luftwaffe base.
Can anyone suggest any other remaining features of pre-WW2 & WW2 aviation from this area?
