In effect the S.M.83 Marchetti was the civil version of the famous S.M.79 three-engined bomber. It was developed in 1937 on the basis of the valuable store of experience gained from the sporting achievements of the military model, culminating in the Istres-Damascus-Paris race. The first S.M.83 was presented in October 1937 at the Milan Salone Aeronautico Internazionale. The new aircraft was virtually the same as the bomber as far as the wing and engines were concerned, but its fuselage was substantially different, being designed to accommodate ten passengers. A total of 23 aircraft were completed in three different versions: the basic model; the S.M.83A designed for the South Atlantic routes, with a smaller capacity of only six passengers and 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) of cargo and mail, to give greater range; and finally the S.M. 83T which was used between Rome and Natal and was capable of carrying 1,100 pounds (500 kg) of mail. |

This is the vintage SMER 1/48 SM 79 converted to a SM 83. The first step was to install clear parts to fuselage and gun positions. I then covered said positions with filler and proceeded to sand smooth. I then sanded the body smooth because the steel frame was too pronounced. The next step was to get some plastic and cut it to size to make the cabin win this.I then placed the clear part in place on the fuselage in a location I thought was the right place. I did this conversion from a few pictures as I could not find any drawings of a SM 83. With the clear part in position, I scribed with an Exacto blade around it. Then with a saw blade on my motor tool, I cut the opening. With file, I smoothed the cut After many trial fittings I achieved a good fit. I then glued the clear parts flush to the outer fuselage. To reinforce I used apuckcy around the edges.Next, I eliminated the bomb bay opening and removed a bulge from the centerline be in the middle of the lower wing. With this done next was the fitting of the section replacing the hump of the 79. After much filing and sanding and filling and sanding, I proceeded to complete the build. I had to go through my spare box for the decals. All the primer and paint used is MRP. I hope you like it. |
